if an atom gains 2 electrons the charge on the resulting ion will be 2-.
for eg: if chlorine(Cl) gains 2 electrons ,then the resulting ion will be Cl2- because chlorine atoms gains two electrons making the no of electrons from 17 to 19 and gain of electron is indicated by a negative sign.
