An atom is a tiny particle that makes up everything in our universe. A compound is 2 or more atoms that bond together to create something new. With all new properties. For example, Carbon is an atom. Oxygen is an atom. They combine to create CO, or carbon monoxide. (Which is a deadly gas.) hope this helped.
